The Students from New York University's Liberal Studies Program

The NYU students are all entering their junior year of college. They were all students of Professor Jacqueline Bishop's oral history course during their freshmen year of college.

Breana Roberts

My name is Breana Carly Roberts, and I am a 20 year-old student at New York University. I grew up in Paradise Valley, Arizona with my parents and three older sisters. I am currently on Dean’s List at NYU where I am majoring in Public Policy with minors in Business Studies and Computer Science. I hope to one-day work in finance! At NYU, I am a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma women’s fraternity and am the Vice President of Recruitment. I have always been passionate about community service and diversity awareness. In high school, I represented my school at the National Association of Independent Schools: Student Diversity Leadership Conference. Later, I planned and led Minitown and Unitown, diversity and anti-bullying conferences, for Middle School and Upper School students respectively. I am very interested in learning about other cultures and parts of the world. I am so excited to be a part of this project as it blends my passion for diversity with my love of travel and meeting new people!

Holly Farkas

My name is Holly Farkas, I’m a San Francisco native, and am in my second year at NYU. For lack of better words, I’ve always described myself as someone very academically interested, but not so academically talented. I’ve always had to work a bit harder in class but outside of the classroom I’ve started discovering a very creative side to the way I think. I want to contribute some small piece of beauty to the world, in what form I have no idea. But I’ve been learning it’s not about being excellent at one thing or knowing exactly what you want to do, but rather craving knowledge and being eager to discover new things and make plenty of mistakes while doing it. I am currently pursuing creative writing and poetry as a Global Liberal Studies Major with a concentration in Contemporary Cultures and Creative Production, as well as a double minor in creative writing and art history.

Adam Zhujiang

My name is Adam Zhujiang, and I am currently studying Media, Culture, and Communications at New York University. My hometown is a small and cozy suburb in Southern California called Redlands. Whenever people ask me why I decided to pack my life away in a few suitcases and move to New York, my response would be "Because I’m not going to like it there." And to be frank, I didn’t. Well, initially at least. I have only ever grown up in the suburbs, and city life seemed overwhelming. But, over time, with every slice of pizza, every concert, every sporting event, and every new friend I made, New York has slowly become my home. I came to New York because I knew obstacles were inevitable and I wanted to challenge myself to excel in this unfamiliar environment. Ultimately, stepping out of my comfort zone is something that I am very happy and very comfortable, with doing.
However, when I’m not busy challenging myself, I am a passionate fantasy football team manager who studied abroad in Argentina. I also enjoy ethnic food that I cannot pronounce.

Jessica Nguyen

My name is Jessica Nguyen and I am a second year student at New York University. I was born and raised in San Diego, California and I am a first generation Asian American. I am majoring in Economics with a minor in Business Studies. My older brother and parents are in the business industry and I hope to one day become a successful businesswoman. Most would characterize me as an intense and passionate person. My perseverance and competitive nature drives me academically though it can cause tunnel vision. I surround myself with great friends and supportive family members in order to have a life outside of academics. I am also a bit of an adrenaline junkie. I strive to overcome my fear of heights by hiking mountains and skydiving. My goal in life is to travel the world and hopefully make some sort of positive impact wherever I go.

Eliza Lambert

My name is Eliza Lambert, and I am a sophomore at Gallatin School of Individualized Study within New York University, majoring in Oral History with a minor in Business of Entertainment, Media and Technology. I began oral history work in 2011 when I worked with Habitat for Humanity on a digital short in Almost Heaven, West Virginia. But it wasn’t until I took Jacqueline Bishop’s oral history course at NYU that I committed to this medium. Since, I’ve worked both independently and with museums on a variety of projects varying from documenting Maine’s Jewish community to a one-interview portrait of rural poverty. In addition, I have supported her oral history work with diversity training that ranges from Maine Seeds of Peace to NYU’s Intergroup Dialogue Program. I write poetry, draw, and have experience in many leadership positions of theater management. I am passionate about the arts, music, travel, social equality, and honing the skill of listening. I believe, especially in our age of media, that oral history will be one of the most effect forms of communicating current events and social trends.
